Combatting the Technician Shortage

RockED and TruVideo partnered to offer video inspection training and certification to accredited automotive schools nationwide.
RockED and TruVideo are partnering to expand video inspection training at automotive schools and colleges nationwide, aiming to help address the technician shortage and strengthen communication skills among future technicians.
Aims to Build Technician Communication Skills
The training will be available to any accredited automotive school interested in offering video inspection education. Participating schools will receive access to RockED’s learning collection, “Leveraging Video Inspections to Gain Trust,” which covers communication, customer service and videography.
RockED cited findings from a recent white paper on future technician skills showing that 75% of technicians consider communication skills important to their work.
Video inspections have become a primary tool for technicians to communicate with customers and can require skills related to clear explanations and thorough documentation.
Program Includes Free Certification, Access
According to TruVideo, consistent use of video and texting can lead to 15% to 30% more hours per repair order and 10% to 30% higher customer service index scores. The program is intended to help future technicians develop skills needed to complete professional video inspections.
TruVideo endorsed the training program and will work with RockED to distribute the certification nationwide at no cost to participating schools or students.
“Just knowing how to repair a vehicle is no longer enough,” said TruVideo co-founder and CEO Joe Shaker. “Knowing how to communicate with customers has become the key.”
The companies said technicians have been slower to adopt video inspections in some service departments because the practice requires communication and presentation skills that are not always part of technician training.
To support earlier adoption, RockED is leveraging TruVideo’s experience and its reported five million service videos per month to introduce video inspection education at both secondary and post-secondary levels.
“We know that continuous learning and innovation are how technicians can enable themselves to progress in their careers,” said RockED CEO Matthias Stoever. “This new certification program from RockED in partnership with TruVideo aims to equip the next generation of technicians with the skills they need to succeed in today’s automotive environment.”
