The Indian government is planning a big change that could affect all vehicle owners who haven’t paid their highway tolls.

If the new Motor Vehicle Rule gets approved, people with pending toll dues won’t be able to get important services like registration renewal, insurance, ownership transfer, or fitness certificates, as per TOI.

This move is part of a draft notification shared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The goal is to make sure no one skips paying toll on National Highways, especially as the system moves to a digital, barrier-free setup.

What Changes for Vehicle Owners?

If your vehicle has an unpaid toll recorded in the system, you won’t be able to do the following:

  • Pay road tax
  • Renew your vehicle’s registration
  • Transfer vehicle ownership
  • Get your vehicle’s fitness certificate

Officials say that vehicle owners must clear all pending toll payments before accessing these services.

Why This Matters Now

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is rolling out Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling. This means no stopping at toll booths—vehicles will be charged electronically. But if your FASTag isn’t working, or you don’t have one, the system will still record your vehicle, and the unpaid toll will show up.

Earlier, NHAI had asked the ministry to link toll payments with the Vahan portal—the main database of vehicle details. The idea is to recover toll dues from vehicles with faulty, blacklisted, or missing FASTags.

If you’re a vehicle owner, keep your FASTag active and toll payments up-to-date. Skipping tolls might soon mean skipping important services for your vehicle too.
