Thousands of BMWs Recalled
BMW recalled more than 100,000 vehicles over a starter issue that can lead to overheating.
The recall includes 2019 and 2020 X5s and X7s, 2020 3 Series sedans and X6s, 2020 and 2021 7 Series sedans, and 2020 8 Series convertibles, coupes and Gran Coupes. Nearly 106,000 are affected.
If one of the vehicles’ starter motor fails and a driver tries repeatedly to start it, the starter motor can overheat due to electrical overload and pose risk of fire in the engine compartment, according to a notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
The agency estimates 1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.
BMW dealerships will update vehicles’ software. The German automaker is scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on Sept. 23.
