Tesla recalls nearly 1.1M vehicles due to safety issue, remote fix planned

Tesla issued a recall for nearly 1.1M vehicles, but plans to fix all the cars remotely.

On Monday, the automaker issued the recall for 1,096,762 vehicles. The problem? Faulty power-window automatic-reversal action. The recall notice posted by NHTSA notes the window’s safety system may not react as it should when an obstruction has been detected. This could lead to pinched fingers or worse.

The NHTSA noted the Teslas affected by the issue fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 118, which is known as “Power-Operated Window Systems.”

Affected models include certain 2017-2022 Model 3s, 2020-2021 Model Ys, 2021-2022 Model S and Model Xs.

Tesla will address the issue with an over-the-air (OTA) software update that will modify the window’s reversal system.

This isn’t the first time Tesla’s fixed issues remotely. In April nearly 600,000 Teslas were recalled due to the vehicle’s Boombox feature interfering with federal vehicle safety standards; a fix was deployed remotely via an OTA software tweak. In February 817,143 Teslas received an OTA software update to address a recall for a faulty seatbelt chime.

Letters will be sent from Tesla to owners in the mail notifiying them to the window safety issue on Nov. 15.
